Hi, my name is Rachael and I am 23 years old, I was born with hip dysplasia.
When I was 18 months old I had my first surgery, which involved a femoral osteotomy & a tetanotomy. I also had a metal plate fitted with 5 screws to hold my hip in place (which are still in situ now), I was then placed in a spica cast for 3 months.
Up until I was 17 years old I had a normal, pain free life. However, since the age of 17 the pain in my hip has got progressively worse. I have been told that due to my original operation my hip hasn't developed properly and is very abnormal, therefore causing osteoarthritis. I was firstly sent for 2 years of physiotherapy, and when this made no difference I tried acupuncture.
In January 2013 I had a hip arthroscopy operation in which they tried to re shape the femoral head and pelvic cup, after this I had 3 months of intense rehab, unfortunately my pain has since only got worse.
About a month ago I had my first lot of cortisone & anesthetic injections. Again these made no difference and the pain is still the same. I am however being listed for more injections this month where I am really hopeful they will make some difference.
Failing this, my consultant has advised me a full hip replacement is my only option going forward. I am very dubious about this due to my age and the risks of the operation. However if the pain continues to progress I do think this is my best option.
I signed up to this site because I think it is really helpful to read other peoples experiences and also talk to people that are in the same sort of situation.
